Sunderland, Newcastle and the Tyne and Wear derby

When Régis Le Bris’ Sunderland sealed promotion to the Premier League in May, even the most passionate Mackem would have struggled to imagine the season unfolding as impressively as it has so far. As the halfway point of the Premier League season approaches, it appears as though the Black Cats are best equipped of the promoted clubs to reverse the trend of the past two seasons, which has seen all three promoted sides taste the bitter sting of relegation at the first time of asking. With the gulf...

Newcastle, Liverpool and the Alexander Isak conundrum

The Premier League is no stranger to players attempting to force their way out of a club in want of a new challenge. Perhaps the standout story of this summer’s transfer window in the Premier League surrounds Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak. While Eddie Howe would have hoped this summer would have presented itself as an opportunity to strengthen his squad following the return of silverware and Champions League football to Tyneside, the Isak transfer saga has taken over the summer and become an...

Can Sunderland stay up in the Premier League?

Sunderland are back in the Premier League for the first time since 2017, and they are making it clear they do not want to be another one-season wonder.Over £110 million has already been spent on a summer recruitment drive that has brought in more than ten new signings. It is a statement of intent from a club determined to avoid the fate of other recently promoted sides, all of whom have been relegated at the first time of asking in the past two seasons.Regis Le Bris arrived on Wearside last July...

Saka and Martinelli seal a signature triumph for Arsenal and Arteta in Madrid

Real Madrid 1 Arsenal 2 (Arsenal win 5-1 on agg)
It may have been Semana Santa, or Holy Week, in Madrid, but there was no divine resurrection for the Champions League holders as Mikel Arteta’s magnificent Arsenal stormed the Bernabéu to put an exclamation point on this quarter-final triumph. Los Blancos had been left with a mountain to climb following their 3-0 defeat in North London last week, a task which proved impossible even to the kings of the comeback. The win, sealed by Gabriel M...

Familiar Atlético heartache as Real book Arsenal date after bizarre Alvarez penalty decision

Atlético Madrid 1 Real Madrid 0 (2-2 on agg; Real win 4-2 on pens)
Real Madrid beat local rivals Atlético Madrid 4-2 on penalties to progress to the quarter-finals of the 24/25 Champions League, lining up a clash with North London side Arsenal. If the agony was all-too familiar for Diego Simeone's side, who have now exited this competition at the hands of their cross-town nemeses for the fifth time in 11 years, the nature of it was new. A penalty shoot-out which bordered on the absurd an...

Amorim confident 'tired' United can rise from penalty pain to progress

Ruben Amorim believes his side can progress to the quarter-finals of the Europa League with the backing of the United faithful at Old Trafford next Thursday, following his side’s 1-1 draw with Real Sociedad in San Sebastián. In a match that ultimately proved devoid of chances and quality, Joshua Zirkzee put the visitors ahead before Mikel Oyzarzabal fired home from the spot to leave the fate of who will progress in the hands of the second-leg in a week’s time. The opening 30 minutes confirmed the...

Brilliant Diaz lights up Bernabéu to give Real slender lead to take across town

Real Madrid 2-1 Atletico Madrid
Current holders Real Madrid are on their way to progressing to the quarter finals of the Champions League following a 2-1 win over local rivals Atlético Madrid in the first leg of the tie. Brahim Diaz, who replaced the suspended Jude Bellingham in the starting lineup, shone for Los Blancos, proving to be the difference maker with the winning goal in the 55th minute.Los Blancos wasted no time in getting off the mark, taking the lead four minutes into the g...

Mbappe nets hat-trick as Real Madrid roar past Manchester City

Champions League: Real Madrid 3 Manchester City 1
15-time winners and current holders Real Madrid cruised past Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City 3-1 (agg. 6-3) to end the Manchester outfit’s European dreams and knock them out of the Champions League for the third time in four seasons. Kylian Mbappé stole the show, netting his first Champions League hat-trick for the club, ensuring Real’s bid to defend their title lives another day.Los Blancos, who hold the record for the most Champions Lea...

“People don’t realise the mental toll": Dele Alli, mental health in football and what more can be done

Alli, who won his last cap for England in 2019, fell out of favour at Tottenham after a drop-off in form, and has since played for Everton and Besiktas, struggling to make an impact for either side. Alli was widely regarded as England’s best and brightest young talent as he excelled under Mauricio Pochettino’s management at Tottenham, but his form began to dramatically drop off during Jose Mourinho’s time at the North London club. Such a drop-off was inexplicable to experts, pundits and fans ali...
